Central Albania · the capital
Tirana is Albania’s capital and its liveliest city — a place that has spent the last three decades repainting itself, literally, after half a century of isolation. Ottoman mosques, Italian boulevards, and communist-era blocks now share the skyline with glass towers, and the result is one of the most distinctive capitals in the Balkans.
The city’s headline attraction is its recent history. Walking tours connect Skanderbeg Square, the pyramid, and the BunkArt museums — vast Cold War bunkers turned exhibition spaces — and explain how the dictatorship shaped everyday life. When you need air, the Dajti Express cable car climbs out of the city to Mount Dajti National Park in about fifteen minutes, trading traffic for forest, viewpoints, and a long dinner above the city.
Give Tirana a day or two, then use it as your base: Krujë’s castle, Berat’s UNESCO old town, and the beaches at Durrës are all within day-trip range. Browse Tirana’s tours and experiences and book them in the Wayward app.
